4 Towns, 4 Tasty New Reasons to Visit

Vicky Bayley, a co-owner of Mike's on the Avenue, believes the New Orleans post-Katrina, post-spill restaurant scene is stronger and more innovative than ever.

"Sometimes when you lose everything, you take more chances, because you're not afraid anymore," she said. If anyone can speak to the evolution of New Orleans restaurants, it's Ms. Bayley. Together with Mike Fennelly, chef and co-owner, she opened the original Mike's on the Avenue in 1991 and was credited by many with bringing Asian fusion to New Orleans. After a successful decade, they closed Mike's to pursue other projects.

Now, 10 years later, the two have reunited in the same location, right off the bustling French Quarter.

"It was like coming home," Mr. Fennelly said. "I had done my wanderlust and ran all over the world — and I got sick of it.

Mike's on the Avenue

The new Mike's is definitely on a roll!

Bayley and Fennelly can take heart that the old saying about lightning never striking twice in the same place is just a myth. In fact, I think I hear the crackling sound of thunder overhead!

A restaurant that helped define 1990s New Orleans dining is set to return, in a different form, just in time for a new decade.

Vicky Bayley and chef Mike Fennelly are planning to open Mike's East-West in the Lafayette Hotel, in the same space where they made Mike's on the Avenue one of the city's hottest restaurants during the Clinton administration.

Many New Orleanians were bummed when Mike’s on the Avenue closed its doors in 1999 after nine successful years in business. It was a real loss to the area, and several restaurants opened in the space, but never made it.

Mike's on the Avenue Returns, Sort Of!

It’s never really been the same since Fennelly and Bayley closed up shop in July 1999. In its prime, Mike’s on the Avenue was one of the most original restaurants in New Orleans, and although “Asian-fusion” is something of a punch line these days, when it’s done right, it can be outstanding.

On every plate that leaves Chef Mike Fennelly's kitchen at Mike's on the Avenue, the food has been painstakingly prepared and arranged for maximum flavor and visual impact. The color, texture and composition have to be just right. But the effect Fennelly wants to achieve is not fussiness. "My aim," he says, "is to make the food look like it was dropped onto the plate spontaneously—and landed in exactly the right places." We call this the WABI effect. This artistic sensibility, combined with Fennelly's cooking talents, has earned him numerous awards and accolades to include a "superior" rating of five beans from The Times-Picayune's restaurant reviewer, and inclusion on Food & Wine magazine's list of America's Top Ten Young Chefs.

Fennelly's restaurant bears not only his culinary imprint, but also his accomplishments as an artist and designer. The striking decor of the bar and dining room-with the Chef's own color spashed paintings adorning the lofty snow-white walls- is rooted in his formal education at the Parsons School of Design in Rhode Island and the School Of Visual Arts in New York City.
